A thermal cure in Amnéville: three weeks to ease the pain, and a real home to recover in

You know those mornings when the first step out of bed costs you. The stiff knee, the back that says no, the hands that take ten minutes to wake up. Then one day your doctor says: "Have you thought about a spa cure?"

Three weeks of warm mineral water, hot mud and treatments. Real hope of relief. And a quiet worry: three weeks away from home, maybe in a small hotel room with a kettle as your only kitchen. This guide walks you through a thermal cure in Amnéville, from the paperwork to the last bath.

Where do thermal cures take place in Amnéville?

Medical cures in Amnéville-les-Thermes are delivered by the Centre thermal Saint-Eloy, in the town's leisure district on the edge of the Coulange woods. The water comes from the Saint-Eloy spring, drawn from about 900 metres underground and rich in minerals and iron.

The centre is approved for two treatment areas:

  • Rheumatology: osteoarthritis (neck, back, hips, knees, hands), some inflammatory rheumatic conditions, tendon problems, after-effects of injuries or surgery;
  • Respiratory / ENT: for adults and children.

A dual orientation combining both is also possible. Depending on what the spa doctor prescribes: bubbling baths, jet showers, hot mud packs, a thermal-water exercise pool, underwater massage and inhalations.

Don't confuse it with Thermapolis and Villa Pompéi next door: those are leisure spas. See our guide to things to do in Amnéville.

Insured in France: the "cure conventionnée" step by step

A French state-funded cure ("cure thermale conventionnée") means 18 days of treatment, usually over three consecutive weeks, 6 days a week (never on Sundays).

  1. Prescription by your GP or a specialist, naming the treatment area and the spa town.
  2. Approval request to your Assurance Maladie fund with the form "Cure thermale – questionnaire de prise en charge", plus an income statement if you also claim travel and accommodation.
  3. Approval is valid for the calendar year it is issued (or until the end of the following first quarter if granted late in the year).
  4. Booking with Saint-Eloy, online. A deposit secures your place; you can request a preferred start time, but it isn't guaranteed.
  5. The spa doctor sees you 2 to 3 times: at the start, midway and at the end, and sets your treatments.

What's reimbursed? According to ameli.fr (2026 rules), the treatment package is covered at 65% and medical supervision at 70%; a supplement remains yours to pay (your top-up insurance may cover it). Travel and accommodation can be partly refunded subject to an income ceiling, and accommodation is refunded as a flat amount, not the full rent. Rules change often: always check ameli.fr and keep every receipt.

Not insured in France? Your options

Living in Luxembourg, Belgium, the UK or elsewhere? The French reimbursement scheme is designed for people insured in France. You can still come:

  • Ask Saint-Eloy directly about treatment as a self-paying guest. The centre also offers short non-reimbursed programmes, such as a 3-day "Jambes Toniques" (tired legs) mini-cure, which requires a medical consultation.
  • Check with your own health insurer whether, and on what terms, it contributes to treatment in another EU country.
  • Pure relaxation? Villa Pompéi (adults only) uses the same thermal water, no prescription needed.

Book early either way: the season usually runs from February/March to December, and the best dates and time slots go first.

A typical day of a spa cure

At your slot, morning or afternoon, the treatments follow one another: bubbling bath, hot mud on the joints, jet shower, pool. The centre's Thermassist app shows your schedule.

Then comes the other half of the cure: rest. Heat and treatments are tiring, especially in week one. A nap, a simple meal, a short walk. Your body is doing the work.

Good to know: the centre has a free car park with about 120 spaces, limited to 3 hours with a French parking disc. Keep one in the car.

What to pack for a cure in Amnéville

From the Saint-Eloy FAQ:

Bring Why
2–3 swimsuits Men: swim briefs or boxer trunks. Women: one or two-piece
Non-slip sandals Required in wet areas
Shower gel, shampoo Toiletries aren't provided
A cup or small bottle For the cold-water fountain
Approval letter, health card, prescription For check-in and the spa doctor

A bathrobe and towel are part of the thermal linen provided daily. Forgot something? The centre's shop sells the basics. Add easy-to-wear clothes, a warm layer and three weeks of your usual medication.

Three weeks away: what really matters

You're in pain, you're tired, and you'll spend 21 nights in one place. What makes the difference:

  • A real kitchen, to eat light and keep your routine instead of three weeks of eating out.
  • A washing machine: otherwise, daily wet swimsuits mean washing by hand in the sink.
  • Peace and a good bed: rest is part of the treatment.
  • Not too many stairs. If your knees or back hurt, the floor matters. Ask before you book, wherever you stay.
  • Easy parking: you'll drive every day.
  • Room for your partner. Many people come as a couple.

Pharmacies, doctors, supermarkets

  • Pharmacies: several in Hayange, including two on rue Maréchal-Foch in the centre. Duty pharmacy: call 3237 or visit 3237.fr.
  • Out-of-hours doctor: 116 117. Emergencies: 15 or 112. EU residents: bring your European Health Insurance Card.
  • Groceries: Lidl in Hayange, E.Leclerc in Fameck (about 10 min), Carrefour and Aldi around Thionville. Most supermarkets close on Sunday afternoons. More in our first-week practical guide.

Cheaper fuel and tobacco across the Luxembourg border

Three weeks of driving adds up. Fuel is generally cheaper in Luxembourg thanks to lower taxes. Handy stations:

  • Aire de Berchem on the A3 motorway, about 8 km past the border at Zoufftgen: Aral heading to France, a giant Shell heading to Luxembourg City;
  • Frisange, on the main road (Robert-Schuman-Strooss), close to Hettange-Grande;
  • Dudelange, route de Volmerange, just over the border;
  • Esch-sur-Alzette, rue d'Audun, the most direct crossing from the Fensch valley;
  • Schengen, on the wine road by the Moselle, a lovely drive too.

Tobacco is cheaper too, but France sets maximum quantities you may bring back, recently tightened. Check the current rules on service-public.gouv.fr or douane.gouv.fr before you buy.

What to do in the afternoons

When your energy comes back:

And Sundays? No treatments, so it's visiting day. Children and grandchildren come for the weekend; in an apartment you can all eat together, and even put them up.
