Three weeks of thermal cure in Mondorf-les-Bains: the guide we wish we'd read first

In 1841, a Saxon driller started boring into the ground at Mondorf, looking for salt. Five years and more than 700 metres later, he hadn't found a single grain of it. What he found instead was a lukewarm, highly mineral water that still brings relief to cure guests today.
If you're reading this, maybe your doctor has just said the word "cure". Pain that won't go away, rehab to get back to, breathing to work on. And straight away come the practical questions: where do I stay for three weeks, what will it cost, how do I stick to my diet, where do I do my laundry? Here's the complete guide, written by Mondorf's neighbours.
Mondorf Domaine Thermal: what's there in 2026
Mondorf-les-Bains is the only spa town in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Its thermal establishment, open to the public since 1847, is now called Mondorf Domaine Thermal. It includes:
- the cure and healthcare centre, with a medical team;
- a wellness area with thermal water pools;
- a Sauna Park: saunas, hammams, salt grotto, Aufguss sessions;
- a spa pavilion (massages, body treatments);
- a large fitness area with group classes;
- two on-site hotels, Mondorf Parc Hôtel and Villa Welcome;
- and all around, a large park laid out in 1886 by landscape architect Édouard André.
Opening hours, prices and access conditions change, so always check the official website, mondorf.lu.
The Mondorf thermal spring
The water comes from the Kind spring, named after that driller, Karl Gotthelf Kind. According to Luxembourg's geological survey, it rises at around 25 °C and contains about 14.5 g of minerals per litre: a sodium-calcium chloride water that is fairly rare in Europe. Two more boreholes followed: the Adelaïde spring (1913) and the Michel Lucius spring (1979).
Fun fact: Victor Hugo came here to take the waters in 1871.
How a thermal cure in Mondorf-les-Bains works
What it treats
The Domaine offers cures for rheumatism (joints, back), respiratory conditions, ENT problems, lymph-venous disorders, obesity, and a Long Covid cure.
How it runs
A cure lasts 21 days, with treatments Monday to Saturday morning: drinking cure, inhalations, thermal baths, jet showers, underwater massage, pool rehab, fango wraps. Afternoons are free for rest.
CNS coverage
For people insured with Luxembourg's CNS (Caisse nationale de santé), the cure is covered after prior approval: your doctor refers you, a cure physician examines you, then the request goes to the CNS. Most thermal treatments are reimbursed at 80%, with one cure of the same type per year.
Worth knowing, and we'd rather be upfront: the CNS also pays an accommodation allowance, but only for an authorised establishment within the municipality of Mondorf. If that allowance matters to you, check with the CNS before booking anything.
Insured in France or elsewhere? Different rules apply, so ask your own health insurer before you go. There's also a French spa town in Moselle: see our guide to a cure in Amnéville.
Thinking like a cure guest: what you actually need
Three weeks is a long time. And when you're in pain, details matter.
- Peace and quiet. After treatments your body wants rest. A calm place to stay is part of the cure.
- A real kitchen. Many cure guests get dietary advice. Three weeks of eating out is expensive and hard to stick to.
- A washing machine. Two swimsuits a day, towels, sportswear.
- Easy parking, so mornings stay stress-free.
- Stairs. Knees, hips, back: it's often the first question. Don't guess, ask us before booking and we'll tell you exactly what each apartment is like.
- Room for whoever comes with you, a partner, or family visiting at weekends.
What to pack (per the Domaine): two swimsuits (one dry, one wet), non-slip pool shoes, sportswear, your insurance card and photo ID for day one.
Cheaper accommodation near Mondorf: why stay on the French side
Luxembourg is one of the most expensive places in Europe to find a place to stay. Across the border in Moselle, prices are generally much lower, and you often get more space.
Mondorff, the small French village next door, borders Mondorf-les-Bains directly. A little further on, Hettange-Grande is about 20 minutes' drive from the thermal domain, and it's our closest base.
If the CNS allowance doesn't apply to you anyway (outpatient cure, wellness break, accompanying person, not CNS-insured), the savings over three weeks can add up.
Luxembourg tips for cure guests
Cheaper fuel in Luxembourg
Fuel is generally cheaper in Luxembourg than in France. In Mondorf-les-Bains, three stations sit along the Route de Luxembourg: Aral, TotalEnergies and Q8. In Schengen there are Aral and Shell on the Route du Vin.
Tobacco: mind the limits
Tobacco is cheaper too, but France limits how much each person can bring back, and those limits have been tightened. Check the current figures on service-public.fr or douane.gouv.fr before you buy.
Free public transport
In Luxembourg, buses, trams and trains are free nationwide (except first class). A bus runs from the Casino 2000 stop to the capital, perfect on days you don't feel like driving.
Things to do in Mondorf in the afternoon
