"Nothing to do here"? Bars, village festivals and events around Thionville all year round

"Thionville? You'll be bored stiff." That's what they told you before you left. Then one Friday night someone drags you into a former chapel turned bar, one December Saturday ten thousand people line a pavement in Yutz waiting for Saint Nicholas, and in August a knight in armour charges beneath a castle wall. Think again: people here know how to go out.
Whether you're here on assignment for a few weeks or settled for months, here are the bars people actually go to, how to find out what's on this weekend, and a calendar of the events that come back every year around Thionville.
Bars where people actually go
La Bascule, Hayange: the Fensch valley's beer bar
On rue de Wendel, right in Hayange, La Bascule describes itself as "a place to live since 1924". It's first and foremost a beer bar: beers of every style and origin, a good selection of rums, and an owner who'll recommend something to suit your taste. The décor mixes prohibition style with modern touches, and there's pool and darts for evenings with the crew. The bar is part of the Scènes au Bar live-music-in-bars circuit: check their Facebook page for dates.
La Chapelle des Paraiges, Thionville: a pint under stained glass
In Thionville town centre, on rue du Cygne, this bar has moved into the former Chapelle des Paraiges. The bar counter looks like an organ, the chairs seem to come from another century and the windows are stained glass. In the glass: dark, blonde and fruity beers. It's the bar you show colleagues who said there was nothing to do here. Events on their Instagram.
The Shamrock, Thionville: the Irish pub in the old town
On rue de l'Ancien Hôtel de Ville, a stone's throw from the Belfry, the Shamrock is Thionville's Irish pub: clinking glasses, bar stools, good cheer and a street terrace when the sun is out. People come for the atmosphere and for the big matches on screen. The obvious meeting point when the crew wants to watch a game together.
Opening hours vary by day and season, so check each bar's Facebook page before you go. And of course: if you've been drinking, don't drive. French drink-driving limits are strict, so pick a designated driver.
What's on this weekend near Thionville? Where to look
Village fêtes don't always advertise much. Here's where to look:
- Pays Thionvillois tourist office (thionvilletourisme.fr): "this week" and "this month" listings.
- Town hall websites and Facebook pages: Thionville (thionville.fr), Yutz, Hayange, Hettange-Grande, Florange, Fameck… This is where the fête patronale (the village's annual fête), music day and Christmas market are announced.
- Le Républicain Lorrain, the regional daily, and its events listings.
- JDS (jds.fr): detailed listings by town: fêtes, concerts, markets.
- Car-boot sales and flea markets ("brocante", "vide-grenier"): vide-greniers.org and brocabrac.fr. From late spring to autumn there's one in a nearby village almost every Sunday.
- Luxembourg side: visitluxembourg.com.
Tip: search for "fête patronale", "fête de village" or "vide-grenier" plus the town's name. And ask your local colleagues: they always know.

Spring: carnival and the first flea markets
The Hagondange Carnival, held since 1985, takes place in spring (in April in recent years). It's one of the biggest in eastern France: dozens of floats, around 1,500 costumed participants and some 40,000 spectators. About 20 minutes from Hayange. As the weather warms up, village flea markets start again.
Summer: music, fireworks and knights
On 21 June it's the Fête de la Musique, all over France, including Thionville and Yutz. On the evening of 13 July, Thionville puts on a big fireworks display over the Moselle (with a drone show in 2025), followed by the parade on the 14th. Many villages have their own fireworks too; the tourist office publishes a list.
In August, head to Sierck-les-Bains for the Castle Festival, held every summer since 1999 at the Castle of the Dukes of Lorraine: knights' combat, jousting, falconry, a medieval market and fireworks over the ruins on Saturday night. About 20 minutes from Hettange-Grande.
Late August is mirabelle plum season in Lorraine, and Metz celebrates with the Mirabelle Festival: crowning of the Mirabelle Queen, concerts and fireworks. About 30 minutes from Hayange. More ideas in Metz in one day.
Late summer and autumn: Schueberfouer and Moselle wine
From late August, for about three weeks, Luxembourg City hosts the Schueberfouer on the Glacis square: a funfair founded in 1340 and now one of the biggest in the region. On the second weekend of September, Grevenmacher on the Luxembourg Moselle holds its Grape and Wine Festival: Wine Queen coronation, folk parade, brass bands, wine and crémant tastings, fireworks. Plan your day with things to do in Luxembourg.
In early October, Fameck hosts the Arab Film Festival, held every year since 1990: screenings and debates, about 10 minutes from Hayange.
Winter: Saint Nicholas and Christmas markets
In Lorraine, Saint Nicholas is a big deal. In early December, Thionville and Yutz each hold a parade. The Yutz one, run by the local association Si Yutz m'était conté, brings together around 700 participants, a dozen floats and nearly 10,000 spectators.
From late November to early January, Thionville celebrates Christmas: Christmas markets in the centre, an ice rink on place Anne Grommerch, activities for children and a light show on the town hall. Hayange has its own Christmas market too, over a weekend in December.
