Weekend on assignment near Thionville: 10 things to do instead of staying in your room

Friday, 5 pm. The shift is over and the local colleagues head home. You open the door to a small room, drop your gear on the chair… and the weekend stretches ahead like a long, empty corridor.

Anyone who has worked an outage at the Cattenom nuclear plant, a job in Florange or a months-long contract in Luxembourg knows that moment. Fatigue builds up, family is far away, the phone becomes your only window. And for a team leader, those weekends decide whether the crew makes it to the end… or starts handing in notice in month two.

The good news: around Thionville there is enough to fill dozens of weekends. Here are the ideas that actually work.

Go home every weekend, or stay?

There is no single right answer.

Going home means family, your own bed, a real reset. But if home is 500 or 800 km away, that's two long journeys in 48 hours and a Monday that starts exhausted.

Staying means real rest, discovering the region and bonding with the crew, as long as you don't spend Saturday and Sunday alone in front of a screen.

On the rules: for workers on long-distance assignment ("grand déplacement") under French contracts, many collective agreements, especially in construction, provide for periodic trips home at weekends with travel costs covered. Frequency and conditions depend on your collective agreement and employer, so ask payroll before you leave.

A popular compromise: go home every other weekend, and make the most of the rest.

Recover after a week of shifts: thermal baths

Thermapolis, Amnéville

After five days on site, your back and legs will thank you. Thermapolis is a 2,800 m² spa fed by thermal water drawn from 900 metres underground: indoor and outdoor pools, a lazy river, bubble baths, massage jets, hydromassage loungers, hot (38 °C) and cold (22 °C) pools, Finnish sauna and hammam.

About 15 minutes from Hayange, 20 from Thionville. Check opening hours and prices on the official Amnéville thermal centre website.

Blow off steam: indoor skiing, theme park, zoo

SnowWorld Amnéville (formerly Snowhall)

Yes, you can ski in Lorraine in July. The former Snowhall, now SnowWorld Amnéville, has a 620-metre indoor slope, one of the longest in the world, plus a beginners' slope. It's around -5 °C on the snow all year. Ski, snowboard and suit rental on site; lessons with the French ski school (ESF) by reservation.

Opening times vary by season: check snowworld.com.

Walygator Grand Est

The theme park in Maizières-lès-Metz is open April to October, with four roller coasters including The Monster, an inverted coaster, and several water rides. About 20 minutes from Hayange.

Amnéville Zoo

Around 2,000 animals, a sea lion show and free-flying birds. Perfect for the weekend your family comes to visit.

A quiet evening: Kinepolis Thionville

Sometimes you just want a film on a big screen. Kinepolis Thionville, on the route d'Arlon near the A31, has 10 screens. Handy on Sunday evening before the week starts again.

Change of scenery: history underground

The Maginot Line at Hackenberg

The largest fort of the Maginot Line, at Veckring. You travel through it on the original electric train, in tunnels that stay at 12 °C all year. The tour lasts about two hours; bring a jacket. About 25 minutes from Hettange-Grande. → The Maginot Line near Thionville.

Malbrouck Castle

The only fully preserved 15th-century castle in Lorraine, above the valley at Manderen. Open April to October, with exhibitions and events. → Castles around Thionville.

Cross the border: Luxembourg, Schengen, the Saar

Luxembourg with free public transport

In Luxembourg, buses, trams and 2nd-class trains are free for everyone, tourists included, since 2020. Cross-border journeys are not included, but once you're in the country you travel without a ticket. The casemates, the UNESCO-listed old town, the Grund district by the river: a day out that costs next to nothing. → Visiting Luxembourg from Moselle.

Schengen

About 20 minutes from Hettange-Grande. The European Museum now includes the Princesse Marie-Astrid boat, where the 1985 agreement was signed: you can visit the signing room. → Schengen and the three borders.

The Saar Loop (Saarschleife)

The most spectacular view in the area, in Germany. The Cloef viewpoint at Orscholz is free; next door, the treetop walk climbs 42 metres above the forest (paid). Roughly 45 minutes to an hour by car. → The Saar Loop from Thionville.

Metz in a day

Less than half an hour by regional train from Thionville. The Centre Pompidou-Metz is 5 minutes' walk from the station, and Saint-Étienne Cathedral has 6,500 m² of stained glass, some by Chagall. → Metz in a day.

Team leaders: morale is something you plan

A bored worker at the weekend is a worker looking for another job. A few simple habits:

  • One group outing a month: thermal baths, indoor skiing, Luxembourg. Cheap and it builds the team.
  • Organise car-sharing: a full car to Metz or Schengen is already an outing.
  • Plan trips home: who goes home which weekend, so the crew doesn't scatter every Friday.
  • Get the accommodation right: that's where evenings and weekends happen.

For a proper team day, see our guide to team building in North Moselle. And for the logistics: organising accommodation for a crew.

Where to stay to keep morale high: a shared living room, not a hotel room

A hotel room is a bed, a TV and a closed door. In the evening everyone eats alone; at the weekend everyone is bored alone.

In an apartment the crew shares a living room and a kitchen. You cook together, watch the match together, plan Saturday around the table, and everyone still has their own bed to recover properly. Full comparison: hotel or apartment for a crew.

That's what matcha home offers:

  • 10 apartments: 7 in Hayange (Fensch valley, about 15 minutes from Thionville and Amnéville) and 3 in Hettange-Grande (about 10 minutes from the Cattenom plant, close to Luxembourg);
  • 2 to 12 guests depending on the apartment, with separate beds (up to 8 beds in one apartment);
  • equipped kitchen, Nespresso machine, washing machine, Wi-Fi, Smart TV for match nights;
  • bed linen and towels provided, self check-in, WhatsApp support.
